People - If there is one truth that consistently came from Julius, it was that the most beautiful thing you will find in Ghana is the people. Hospitable, welcoming, shy yet confident, the people I have met so far in Ghana have been amazing. There is a deep desire to really know you, and there is a gift of accepting anyone who comes along.

My first day here, Julius’ sisters took me to the local market for groceries and they were fully entertained at the reactions of the vendors. “Obroni” (white) was being called out often, women came to introduce themselves and shake my hand, and everyone laughed a lot. It was pretty obvious that whites don’t shop at this particular market that often, but it was fun.

As time goes on, I hope to share more about what we see, who we meet, and what we’re learning. For now, I want to emphasize that Ghana is worth the trip simply to experience the beauty of her people! Thanks for the warm welcome!!!

Roads – we are in a brand new area of Tema called “Golf City” where houses are large and development is fresh; yet, all of our streets are still dirt roads that become incredibly muddy, bumpy, and complicated with the rains. We also experience the common crossing of cattle or sheep as they go to wherever there is grass and water. I am forever entertained when I reach the major round-about and see cattle grazing next to parked Toyotas. And we’re not talking small cattle – these are big with long horns. Needless to say, I’ve grown accustomed to the chickens outside my door, the cows grazing alongside the road, and the goats halting traffic so they can get to the other side Smile
